Traditionary, the students have been hand making Happi from scratch, from print making to cutting the fabric to printing etc…However, due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus, group work was prohibited at school, and so this year we were unable to hand make Happi like every other year……… But still, we wanted to somehow save the designs that everyone in the Happi team had already come up with…….So this year, we decided to outsource the production to complete the happi coats.
In addition, this year the HappiColle (Happi Collection), an event for the happi teams to show off their happi coats, will be broadcast live online. Since it’s online, the direction of the performances will be different from the past years. Please enjoy the updated version of HappiColle.
Think of things we are “still” able to do under the condition, think of things we are able to do “because” of the condition. With these in mind, we’ve been doing our best to reach this special day.
The 2021Happi
Changing the atmosphere from the main visual, I imagined a mountain with a strong wind blowing. The moon, the sun, and the emblem in the center of the back are based on the image of the five crests that are considered to be the most prestigious of kimono. I designed it so that it would look different on the left and right sides as a kimono.
The design will be selected from the ideas submitted to
the departments by majority vote or other means.
The fabric is cut based on the pattern.
It is divided into three basic parts: body, collar, and sleeves.
Making the plates for silk screen printing.
Separate plates are made for each color,
and the pattern is transferred to
the plate using a photosensitive emulsion.
Separate the layers for each ink
and repeat the process of layering them in order.
After each color is printed, hang it up to dry the ink.
Then, the printed cloths are sewn together one by one,
and each department completes a matching happi coat!
In the Happi Collection (a.k.a. HappiColle), freshmen and sophomores from the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Music will perform to
show off the happi coats they’ve created! This year, it will be broadcast live from Hall 6. Enjoy!
